A Benchmark Bottle With Something to Prove
There’s always a bit of expectation when you open a bottle of Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc. It’s one of those names that carries weight, especially with Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. You almost go into it thinking you already know what you’re going to get.
I opened this alongside a proper home cooked meal, sea bass, mash, greens and a light lemon butter sauce, so it had every chance to show itself at its best.
First Impressions in the Glass
Straight away it felt quite composed. There’s citrus there, definitely lime and grapefruit, with a bit of that classic gooseberry note, but nothing is shouting.
It leans slightly more on the herbal side than the tropical. There’s a freshness to it, a sort of clean, almost saline edge that makes it feel quite polished rather than explosive.
Give it a few minutes though and it does start to open up. It’s not a wine that demands attention, it sort of earns it.
On the Palate
This is where it really comes into its own, especially with food.
The acidity is spot on. It cuts through everything on the plate, lifts the lemon in the sauce and keeps the whole mouthful feeling fresh. There’s citrus running through it, a bit of green apple, and a subtle mineral note that gives it a bit of length.
It’s not trying to be a fruit bomb. It’s more about balance and structure.
Where It Sits for Me
This is a really well-made wine, there’s no getting away from that. It feels refined, considered, and very much built for the table.
On its own, it might feel a touch reserved if you’re used to bigger, more expressive Sauvignon Blancs. But paired with the right food, it makes a lot more sense.
It’s one of those wines that doesn’t need to prove anything, which is probably why it comes across a bit more understated.
Final Thoughts
Cloudy Bay is still a benchmark for a reason. It’s clean, precise and does everything properly.
For me, it’s at its best when it’s part of a meal rather than the main event. Give it something fresh and citrus-led to work with and it really settles into itself.
Through the Terroir Verdict
Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2025
Region: Marlborough NZ
Grape: Sauvignon Blanc
Price: £29
Tasting Notes
On the Nose: Lime, grapefruit, and a touch of gooseberry with a subtle herbal edge.
On the Palate: Crisp citrus leads the way, backed up by green apple and a slightly saline, mineral note.
Finish: Clean, refreshing, and nicely balanced with a lingering zesty lift.
Verdict
Refined and well put together, this is Sauvignon Blanc with a bit more restraint. It doesn’t jump out of the glass straight away, but give it a few minutes and it starts to show its class. Best enjoyed with food where that acidity and structure really come into play.
Score: 90/100
