Christmas Eve always feels like the perfect excuse to open something a bit special. This year I had a rough plan in my head but as it turned out, the night went in a completely different direction.
And honestly, that’s what made it.
What started as a thought-out selection ended up being more of a lesson in taste, expectation, and what actually works in the moment.
Starting with Sherry and a Reality Check

We kicked things off with a bottle of Solear Manzanilla. I liked the idea of it more than anything something a bit different, a bit more serious to start the proceedigs
But within about 10 seconds, we all looked at each other and knew. It just didn’t land.
Between me, my mum, my dad and my partner, the verdict was pretty much the same sharp, dry, almost salty. Not unpleasant, just not what anyone wanted on Christmas Eve as we are and have always been a Harveys Bristol Cream family.
And I think that’s the key point.
At Christmas, we’re not really chasing complexity or trying to analyse every sip. We’re after something that just works something comforting, something easy to enjoy together.
Compared to something like Harveys Bristol Cream, which we’ve had loads of over the years, this was the complete opposite. That’s rich, rounded, slightly sweet this was lean and unforgiving, not that festive treat you wait all year for.
Wrong wine? No.
Wrong moment? Probably.

Nyetimber: The Moment the Night Turned

NNext up was Nyetimber Classic Cuvée and this is where the celebrations properly started.
Straight away, you could tell this was on a different level. Not just good for English wine just good, full stop.
It had that proper Champagne feel to it. Fine bubbles, loads of freshness, a bit of that bready depth underneath and most importantly, it made everyone want another glass which was a shame as we only had one bottle so we were all scrambling for the last glass,
And for me, that’s what a Christmas wine should do. It should bring people into it, not make them work for it.

And Then Came the Greywacke

Next up was a a bottle of Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc, which we paired with some smoked salmon and prawns.
And straight away, this was completely different again.
It just jumped out of the glass. Proper intensity. Loads of tropical fruit, citrus, that classic New Zealand punch but with a bit more about it than your standard Sauvignon.
There’s a weight to it, a bit more texture, and it doesn’t feel thin or overly sharp like some can.
It’s one of those wines where you don’t really need to sit there analysing it you just know it’s really good.
After the Manzanilla and the Nyetimber, this actually sat quite nicely in the middle of everything. Still fresh and lively, but a bit more expressive and easy to get into.
It didn’t steal the show like the Nyetimber, but it definitely held its own check out the review here
Viña Alberdi: The Perfect Red to Finish

We finished with Viña Alberdi, and this was just spot on.
If anything, it surprised me a bit with how much it delivered. It felt like a ramped up Campo Viejo but done properly.
Loads of that coconut and vanilla coming through from the American oak, really nice red fruit, and just enough structure to give it some length without making it hard work.
It’s one of those wines where you take a sip and immediately relax into it.
No confusion, no greenness, no edges just balanced, easy, and really enjoyable.

Final Thoughts: A Night of Contrast
What made this night special wasn’t perfection — it was contrast.
- A miss with the Manzanilla
- A standout with the Nyetimber
- A great food pairing with the Greywacke
- A reliable, crowd pleasing finish with the Rioja
And somewhere in that journey was a reminder of what I’m really looking for in wine:
Balance, flavour, and something that makes you want another sip.
What I Learned
Not every “serious” wine fits every occasion. English sparkling is far better than a lot of people give it credit for. Rioja especially at Christmas just keeps delivering.
The best wine is the one that works in the moment.
