Pleasure vs Power: Why I Chose Pinot Noir Over Zinfandel (and Got It Right)

There’s a moment when you’re choosing a bottle of wine on a restaurant menu where you just stop and hesitate. Not because you don’t know what you’re looking at, but because you know exactly what each option is going to give you. And the question becomes less about what’s “better” and more about what actually suits the moment.

My Experience at Miller and Carter

That was me today

I was sat looking at the wine list at Miller and Carter, not far from my house, torn between a Mark West Pinot Noir and a Boneshaker Zinfandel. Two completely different directions. One soft, fruit driven and easy. The other big, bold and unapologetically powerful.

Juicy ribeye steak cooking over an open fire grill with flames, showcasing delicious grilling action.

If this was an evening, I probably would’ve gone Zinfandel without thinking too much about it. Something about that rich, jammy, slightly spicy style just fits when you’re settling in for the night. But this wasn’t that.

This was an afternoon, a nice steak in front of me, and the kind of setting where you want to enjoy the wine, not feel like you’re battling with it.

So I went for a Mark West Pinot Noir.

Mark West Pinot Noir

And straight away, it just made sense.

From the first sip it was all about clean fruit. Cherry, a bit of strawberry, nothing heavy, nothing forced. No bitterness creeping in at the end, no harshness, just a smooth, easy drink that did exactly what I wanted it to do.

With the steak it came alive even more. The fat from the meat filled it out just enough to give it a bit more presence, but it never lost that softness. It didn’t try to dominate the plate, it just sat alongside it perfectly, not saying all Pinot Noir are like this as I have had some absolute brutes but this was right what I wanted.

It also made me realise something about where my palate is right now.

I’m not chasing big, aggressive wines at the moment. I don’t want anything overly spicy, overly oaky or tiring to drink. I want something that’s clean, fruit led and just enjoyable from start to finish.

And that’s exactly what this was.

Would the Zinfandel have been a better wine? Maybe in a different setting. But on this day, at that time, it would’ve been too much. Too much alcohol, too much weight, too much of everything when all I really wanted was something I could just sit back and enjoy.

There’s a lesson in that.

Wine isn’t about picking the “best” bottle. It’s about picking the right one for the moment you’re in.

This time, I got it right.
