First Impressions
I’d been meaning to try Greywacke for a while. It’s one of those bottles you keep hearing about, especially when people talk about proper New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

As soon as it was poured, you could tell this wasn’t your average supermarket Sauvignon.
It just jumped out of the glass.
In the Glass
There’s that classic New Zealand profile straight away tropical fruit, citrus, that real punch of flavour but it doesn’t feel thin or overly sharp like some cheaper examples can.
It’s got a bit more weight to it. A bit more texture and its not too acidic the type that gives you a severe bout of heartburn.
You’re not just getting acidity and zing, there’s something underneath holding it all together, which makes it far easier to drink than a lot of Sauvignons in this style.
The Overall Feel
What I liked most about this was how easy it was to enjoy without overthinking it.
It’s expressive, it’s lively, and it does exactly what you want it to do but it doesn’t feel one dimensional.
After a few sips, you’re not analysing it you’re just reaching for another glass, problem was we only had one bottle between 4 of us.
Final Thoughts
This is probably the benchmark for what people expect from New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc but done properly.
It’s not trying to be clever, it’s just a really well made wine that delivers exactly what it promises.
And sometimes, that’s exactly what you want.
