I’ve been looking for this bottle for a while, so there was no ceremony when I finally got my hands on it. It was open and in the decanter within minutes. Sometimes you just have to follow your instinct.

This is a wine that had built a bit of anticipation for me, and it turned out to be a really interesting one to sit with. Not just because of how it drinks now, but because of what it hints at becoming.

Brancaia Tre Toscana

First Impressions

Straight out the bottle, it felt exactly like a young Tuscan blend should.

The nose was very fruit forward, almost lifted, with that slightly airy feel that comes from youth. It wasn’t overly complex at first, more about freshness and energy than depth. You get that sense immediately that this is a wine still in its early phase.

I gave it a proper decant and left it alone for a few hours, which made all the difference.

Letting It Open Up

Coming back to it later, the wine had settled into itself.

The fruit became more defined, moving into a clearer cherry profile with a touch of plum behind it. There was a subtle vanilla note sitting quietly in the background, nicely integrated rather than jumping out.

What stood out most was the length. It holds on well, and that’s always a good sign. There’s structure here, and it shows.

On the Palate

This is where you really understand what the wine is about.

The acidity is fresh and lively, exactly what you expect from Sangiovese. It keeps everything moving and stops the wine from feeling heavy. The tannins are definitely present, slightly grippy, giving it that bit of edge that tells you it hasn’t quite settled yet.

It’s well balanced, but not fully harmonised. Nothing feels out of place, but you can tell the different components are still finding each other.

That’s not a criticism, it’s just where the wine is in its journey.

A Wine That Needs Time

If you’re opening this now, it drinks well, especially with food, but it’s clear that a bit of patience would go a long way.

Give this a few years and I think it becomes a different wine altogether. The tannins will soften, the fruit will deepen, and that slight edge will turn into something much more rounded.

You can feel the potential in the glass.

Final Thoughts

This is a really solid Tuscan blend that delivers on quality, even if it’s not fully there yet in terms of harmony.

It’s vibrant, structured and shows good length, which are all signs you’re dealing with a well-made wine. It just depends on what you’re looking for.

If you enjoy youthful energy and a bit of grip, you’ll get a lot out of it now. If you prefer something more complete and integrated, this is one to either revisit later or buy with the intention of leaving it alone.

Through the Terroir Verdict

Brancaia Tre 2023

Region: Tuscany, Italy

Grape: Sangiovese/Cabernet/Merlot

Price: £15

Tasting Notes

On the Nose: Slightly savoury with gentle spice, dried herbs and subtle oak influence

On the Palate: Red cherry, plum, subtle spice, touch of oak, still youthful and vibrant

Finish: Medium to long, structured with fresh acidity and grippy tannins

Verdict

A really solid Tuscan blend that shows plenty of quality, but still feels like it’s finding its feet. The fruit is clean and expressive, the structure is there, and the length is impressive, but it just needs a bit more time for everything to come together.
One to enjoy now with food, but even better with a few years in the bottle.

Score: 89/100
