yep this is class.
That’s exactly what happened when I opened Château Musar 2018.

I’ve been chasing something for a while now, and I didn’t fully know how to describe it until this bottle.
First Impressions This Is not a Shy Wine!
Straight out of the bottle, this wasn’t giving much away in a conventional sense.
It’s not bursting with obvious fruit. Instead, it’s a bit darker, a bit moodier.
I was getting this burnt marshmallow note straight away, mixed in with plums and something slightly smoky. Not unpleasant at all, just different. It makes you lean in rather than sit back.
Give it a bit of air though and it starts to open up properly.
In the glass it turns into this mix of winter spice and forest fruit, with a subtle bit of vanilla on the back end just rounding it off. Nothing flashy, nothing overdone.
But what stood out wasn’t any one flavour.
It was the pure depth.
What I’ve been chasing isn’t just “nice wine” or even “complex wine”.
It’s that feeling of that amount of concentration. Where the wine doesn’t just hit you and disappear, it sits there, evolves, and keeps going.
Why This Works (Even Though It’s a Bit Wild)
Château Musar isn’t polished.
I couldnt agree more with Tom Gilbey in his book thirsty where he says that this is a wine everyone should try at least once!
It’s not clean cut or perfectly put together like a top Bordeaux.
It’s got a bit of a wild side to it slightly smoky, slightly savoury, a bit unpredictable and some people dont like it and call it flawed.
But that’s what makes it interesting, because underneath that, there’s serious substance.
It’s layered, it’s got weight, and most importantly, it sticks around. The finish just keeps rolling on rather than dropping off.
It doesn’t feel engineered. It feels like it’s got something to say.
Where This Fits In My Taste
This bottle has probably done more for my understanding of what I like than anything recently.
I’m clearly not chasing, big fruit, heavy oak or easy drinking wines and to be fair they dont excite me.
I want wines that make you slow down a bit. Wines that reveal themselves rather than just shout at you.
And more than anything, wines that have that depth and concentration running all the way through them.
Final Thoughts
Château Musar 2018 isn’t just a good wine.
It’s one of those bottles that makes you take a step back and reassess what you’re actually looking for.
It’s not perfect, it’s not polished, but it’s got character, depth, and presence in a way that’s hard to find.
And for me, that’s exactly the point.
This definitely won’t be the last bottle i buy.

Tasting Notes
On the Nose: Burnt marshmallow, ripe plums, a slightly smoky edge that softens with air.
On the Palate: Winter spice, forest fruit, savoury depth with layers that keep unfolding.
Finish: Long, evolving, with a subtle vanilla oak note wrapped around it.
Verdict
Not your typical polished red this has a wild side.
But that’s exactly what makes it work. There’s serious depth here, real concentration, and a finish that just keeps going. It’s not about immediate fruit, it’s about what happens after the first sip.
This is the kind of wine that makes you slow down and pay attention.
