What a Collab this is!
I went into Majestic in Birkdale which I do often and I picked this up because of one thing really. Its in the Definition by Majestic Range and its called Vina Majestica, The collaboration with La Rioja Alta, S.A.. I’ve had their wines before and I know exactly what they’re about, so straight away this felt a bit different to your usual “own label” Rioja.

I wasn’t expecting miracles. More just curious to see whether it would actually carry any of that house style or whether it would just be a watered down version.
First sniff and I was excited!
Not Your Typical Supermarket Rioja
There’s a certain expectation with Rioja at this price point, especially if your reference is something like Campo Viejo.
Easy drinking, fairly soft, a bit anonymous if I’m being honest. Nothing wrong with it, but it doesn’t really show you what Rioja can actually be.
This felt completely different straight away. More restraint, more intent, less about being obvious and more about being put together properly.
It just smelled like someone knew what they were doing.
In the Glass
On the nose it’s cinnamon, sweet spice and a soft, slightly muted cherry. Not loud, not jumping out of the glass, just nicely controlled.
That muted fruit is always a good sign for me. It tells you the wine hasn’t been pushed too far and there’s a bit of thought behind it.
On the palate it steps up again. There’s real presence here. Sweet spice carries through and that coconut note comes in, almost like a coconut macaroon in both texture and flavour. That’s classic American oak and exactly what you’d expect from this style when it’s done properly.
There’s weight to it, but it’s not clumsy. It holds together well and there’s decent length on the finish which is where a lot of wines at this level fall away.
How Close Is It Really?
This is where it gets interesting.
It’s very close to Viña Alberdi Reserva. Closer than I expected it to be. You can clearly see the same thinking behind it.
If I’m being picky, it maybe just lacks that final layer of depth or evolution that Alberdi has, but I wouldn’t even call it a lack of polish. It’s more that Alberdi just gives you a bit more over time.
This doesn’t feel like a second wine. It feels like a properly made Rioja that sits just below that level.
And importantly, it sits miles above what most people think Rioja tastes like, you look at the cork and they have clearly spared no expense.
Why It Works
There’s a bit of a bigger point here.
Yes, you get those coconut and spice notes from the oak. That’s part of the style. But oak alone doesn’t make a wine feel like this.
You still need balance, structure and that sense that everything has been handled carefully.
That’s the difference. You can make a wine smell similar, but you can’t fake how it comes together on the palate.
This is where that link to La Rioja Alta really shows.
Final Thoughts
This isn’t just a slightly better supermarket Rioja. It’s a completely different level of wine.
If your idea of Rioja is based on something like Campo Viejo Reserva, then this is the kind of bottle that resets that expectation a bit.
For me, it does exactly what Majestic would have wanted it to do. It gives you a proper look at a traditional Rioja style without having to go all the way up the price ladder.
An Epic wine for the price that can and should sit shoulder to shoulder with top wines from the region, well done Majestic!
Through the Terroir Verdict
Vina Majestica
Region: Rioja, Spain
Grape: Tempranillo
Price: £12.50
Tasting Notes
On the Nose: Cinnamon, sweet spice, and a soft, slightly muted cherry.
On the Palate: Powerful and well put together. Sweet spice carries through with a coconut macaroon note in both flavour and texture.
Finish: Decent length with the spice and oak notes lingering nicely.
Verdict
A proper Rioja that shows real intent. This sits miles above your typical supermarket bottle and comes surprisingly close to Viña Alberdi Reserva in style. Not quite the same level of depth, but close enough to make it seriously good value.
